New Dietary Guidelines Scientific Report Released

The new 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Scientific Report compiled by the Guidelines Advisory Committee was posted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on July 14, 2020. Not surprisingly, the report recommends Americans should eat more fruits and vegetables and cut down their intake of red meat, sugar and alcohol. The report nudges down the amount of added sugar that it recommends as appropriate for a healthy diet. Five years ago, the recommendation was that no more than 10% of all calories consumed come from added sugars. This year, the committee recommends no more than 6% of calories come from them....

Obesity Threatens US National Security

In a CNN article on July 20, 2020, seventy-one percent of people between the ages of 17 and 24 do not qualify for military service, with obesity being the leading medical disqualifier. The article was based on a white paper published July 20, 2020 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Citing numbers from a 2018 report, the paper said diet-related illnesses are a growing burden on the United States economy, worsening health disparities and impacting national security.
